Esomeprazole Gastro – Resistant Tablets IP 40mg

Esomeprazole Gastro-Resistant Tablets IP 40 mg is a medication used to reduce stomach acid and treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and Zollinger–Ellison syndrome. It belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and works by blocking the acid-producing enzyme (H⁺/K⁺ ATPase) in the stomach lining, providing relief from acid-related symptoms and promoting healing of the gastrointestinal tract.

Description

Esomeprazole is the S-isomer of omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the hydrogen-potassium ATPase enzyme system of gastric parietal cells. The gastro-resistant coating ensures that the drug bypasses the acidic environment of the stomach and is absorbed in the intestines, preserving its effectiveness.

Mechanism of Action:

Esomeprazole irreversibly binds to and inhibits the H⁺/K⁺ ATPase enzyme system (proton pump) in the gastric parietal cells. This inhibition blocks the final step of gastric acid production, leading to a significant and sustained reduction in both basal and stimulated acid secretion.

Uses:

Esomeprazole 40 mg is used for the treatment and management of acid-related gastrointestinal disorders, including:

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) – Erosive esophagitis and maintenance
  • Peptic Ulcer Disease – Gastric and duodenal ulcers
  • NSAID-associated gastric ulcers – Prevention and treatment
  • Zollinger–Ellison Syndrome – Pathologic hypersecretory conditions
  • H. pylori eradication (as part of triple therapy)
  • Acid-related dyspepsia – Symptom relief
  • Stress ulcer prophylaxis in hospitalized patients
