Description
Valacyclovir Tablets USP 1000 mg are effective, well-tolerated antiviral agents primarily used for herpes-related infections. The 1 gram strength is particularly convenient for conditions requiring higher doses, such as shingles or initial genital herpes outbreaks. Safety and efficacy depend on proper dosing, especially in older adults and those with kidney disease.
Mechanism of Action:
Valacyclovir is a prodrug that is rapidly converted into acyclovir in the body. Acyclovir interferes with viral DNA polymerase, inhibiting the replication of viral DNA. It is active primarily against herpesviruses, including:
- Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1, HSV-2)
- Varicella-zoster virus (VZV)
- Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)
- Cytomegalovirus (CMV) (limited activity)
Indications and Usage: Valacyclovir 1000 mg is prescribed for:
- Herpes zoster (shingles) in adults
- Genital herpes: Initial episode, Recurrent outbreaks & Chronic suppressive therapy (in patients with frequent recurrences)
- Cold sores (herpes labialis)
- Reduction of genital herpes transmission
- Herpes simplex infections in HIV-infected patients (suppressive therapy)
- Treatment of chickenpox in children (off-label in some regions)
