Description
Tropicamide and Phenylephrine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution is a sterile, prescription eye drop formulation used for diagnostic mydriasis (pupil dilation) during ophthalmic examinations. It contains a combination of Tropicamide, a short-acting anticholinergic, and Phenylephrine, a sympathomimetic (adrenergic agonist). This dual-action formula ensures rapid, effective, and sustained pupil dilation for fundus examination, pre-operative assessment, and certain therapeutic indications.
Mechanism of Action:
- Tropicamide blocks muscarinic receptors in the iris sphincter and ciliary muscle, leading to pupil dilation and loss of accommodation.
- Phenylephrine stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors in the dilator muscle of the iris, enhancing and maintaining mydriasis.
Together, they provide faster onset and longer duration of pupil dilation than either agent alone.
Indications / Uses:
- Fundus Examination
- Retinal Imaging
- Pre-Operative Preparation
- Cycloplegic Refraction (in combination with other agents)
