Description
Tretinoin Cream USP 0.05% is a topical prescription medication primarily used in the treatment of acne vulgaris, and secondarily for photoaged skin (skin damaged by prolonged sun exposure). It contains tretinoin, a derivative of vitamin A (retinoic acid), which works by affecting the growth and differentiation of skin cells.
Tretinoin is widely recognized for its ability to unclog pores, reduce blackheads and whiteheads, and promote healthy skin turnover. It is also commonly prescribed for fine wrinkles, roughness, and hyperpigmentation associated with photoaging.
Mechanism of Action:
Tretinoin works by binding to specific retinoic acid receptors in the skin, promoting faster cell turnover and shedding of keratinocytes. It helps clear up acne lesions by:
- Preventing the formation of comedones (clogged pores)
- Reducing inflammation
- Promoting exfoliation and smoother skin texture
In photoaged skin, it helps stimulate collagen production and even skin tone by reducing melanin granule aggregation.
Indications:
- Acne vulgaris (mild to moderate)
- Photoaging (fine wrinkles, dark spots, roughness – off-label use under dermatological guidance)
- Hyperpigmentation disorders like melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (often combined with other agents)
