Description
Tolvaptan Tablets 15 mg are used primarily to treat clinically significant hyponatremia due to SIADH, heart failure, or cirrhosis. It works by increasing free water excretion, thus raising serum sodium without causing electrolyte loss. While effective, it carries important risks—especially liver injury and overcorrection of sodium—and requires close monitoring.
Mechanism of Action:
Tolvaptan is a selective vasopressin V2-receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of antidiuretic hormone (ADH or vasopressin) at the V2 receptors in the kidneys. This leads to increased free water excretion (aquaresis) without loss of electrolytes like sodium or potassium. As a result, serum sodium levels rise and fluid overload is reduced.
Indications:
Tolvaptan 15 mg is used to treat:
-
Hyponatremia (low sodium levels) associated with:
-
Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion (SIADH)
-
Heart failure
-
Cirrhosis
-
-
Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) (higher doses used) – to slow the progression of kidney enlargement and functional decline
