Description

Terbinafine Tablets USP 250 mg are oral antifungal tablets used primarily for the treatment of fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails, such as onychomycosis (nail fungus) and tinea infections (e.g., athlete’s foot, ringworm, jock itch). Terbinafine is a synthetic allylamine antifungal agent that is fungicidal, meaning it kills the fungal cells by disrupting their cell membrane integrity.

It works by inhibiting the enzyme squalene epoxidase, which is essential in the biosynthesis of ergosterol — a key component of fungal cell membranes. As a result, squalene accumulates inside fungal cells, leading to their death. This makes Terbinafine highly effective, especially in treating dermatophyte infections.

Mechanism of Action:

Terbinafine selectively inhibits squalene epoxidase, blocking the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of the fungal cell membrane. This disruption leads to fungal cell death, particularly in dermatophytes like Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton species.

Indications:

  • Onychomycosis (fungal nail infections of the toenails or fingernails)
  • Tinea corporis (ringworm of the body)
  • Tinea cruris (jock itch)Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot)
  • Tinea capitis (scalp ringworm)
  • Pityriasis versicolor
  • Fungal infections resistant to topical treatment
