Description
Telmisartan is a long-acting angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to protect cardiovascular health in high-risk individuals. By blocking angiotensin II receptors, it helps relax blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily, which lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney problems.
Mechanism of Action:
Telmisartan selectively blocks the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor, preventing the vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II. This leads to vasodilation, reduced aldosterone secretion, and lower sodium and water retention, thereby decreasing blood pressure and cardiovascular workload.
Uses:
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Cardiovascular risk reduction in patients unable to take ACE inhibitors
- Diabetic nephropathy
- Heart failure
