Description
Tacrolimus Ointment 0.1% is a non-steroidal, topical immunosuppressant used to treat moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) and other chronic inflammatory skin conditions, especially when corticosteroids are not suitable. It offers effective symptom relief without the risk of skin thinning, making it ideal for sensitive skin areas like the face or neck. However, it must be used cautiously due to potential risks associated with immune suppression and sun sensitivity.
Mechanism of Action:
Tacrolimus is a calcineurin inhibitor. It works by inhibiting T-cell activation and reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-2. By modulating the local immune response, tacrolimus helps reduce inflammation, redness, and itching without causing skin thinning (a common side effect of steroids).
Uses:
Tacrolimus Ointment 0.1% is indicated for:
- Moderate to severe atopic dermatitis in adults and adolescents (≥16 years)
- Other steroid-refractory inflammatory skin conditions, such as:
-
Lichen planus
-
Vitiligo (off-label)
-
Psoriasis (off-label in sensitive areas)
