Description
Polyethylene Glycol 400 with Propylene Glycol Ophthalmic Solution is a sterile, over-the-counter ophthalmic preparation commonly used as an artificial tear to relieve dry eye symptoms. This dual-lubricant eye drop is formulated to mimic the natural moisture of the eyes and to help restore and maintain a healthy tear film on the ocular surface.
Active Ingredients:
Polyethylene Glycol 400 (PEG 400):
- A water-soluble polymer used as a demulcent (lubricant).
- Helps retain moisture on the surface of the eye.
- Forms a smooth, soothing protective layer that reduces friction and enhances comfort.
Propylene Glycol:
- A humectant and lubricant that attracts water and binds moisture.
- Helps stabilize and protect the tear film.
- Offers immediate soothing relief to irritated or dry eyes.
Mechanism of Action:
Polyethylene Glycol 400 and Propylene Glycol work in synergy to supplement the eye’s natural tear film. By creating a protective moisture barrier over the ocular surface, they reduce tear evaporation, improve tear film stability, and prevent ocular surface damage. The result is enhanced hydration and comfort for the eyes, especially in individuals suffering from dry eye syndrome or ocular surface stress.
Many formulations also contain additional agents such as hydroxypropyl guar, sorbitol, or electrolytes to further enhance the viscosity, mimic the natural composition of tears, and optimize ocular surface health. Some versions include preservatives like Polyquad or Purite, while others are preservative-free, making them safer for sensitive eyes or frequent use.
