Description
Pantoprazole Tablets IP 20 mg are oral, gastro-resistant tablets used to treat acid-related disorders of the stomach and intestines. Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses gastric acid secretion by selectively inhibiting the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme in the parietal cells of the stomach lining. This leads to a significant and long-lasting reduction in both basal and stimulated acid secretion, aiding the healing of ulcers and relieving symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion.
The 20 mg strength is typically prescribed for mild to moderate conditions, maintenance therapy, or as part of combination therapy in the treatment of H. pylori-associated peptic ulcers.
Mechanism of Action:
Pantoprazole irreversibly binds to and inhibits the gastric proton pump (H⁺/K⁺-ATPase), blocking the final step in acid production. This results in a marked reduction in gastric acidity, allowing healing of acid-related damage and symptomatic relief.
Indications:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Mild erosive esophagitis
- Acid-related dyspepsia
- Maintenance therapy for healed erosive esophagitis
- Adjunct in Helicobacter pylori eradication regimens
- Prevention of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers
