Description
Pantoprazole Gastro-Resistant Tablets IP are proton pump inhibitor (PPI) tablets used to treat conditions caused by excess stomach acid. These include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and H. pylori-associated peptic ulcers (in combination therapy). Pantoprazole works by irreversibly inhibiting the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme system (proton pump) in gastric parietal cells, leading to a profound and long-lasting reduction in gastric acid production.
The tablet is enteric-coated (gastro-resistant) to ensure the drug passes through the acidic environment of the stomach without degradation and is absorbed in the intestine, where it becomes active. This coating enhances the bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of pantoprazole.
Mechanism of Action:
Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that selectively binds to and inhibits the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme in the stomach lining. This enzyme is the final step in gastric acid secretion, and its inhibition significantly lowers acid production, providing symptom relief and promoting healing of acid-related damage.
Indications:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Erosive esophagitis
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (pathological hypersecretory conditions)
- Adjunct to antibiotics for H. pylori eradication in peptic ulcer disease
- Prevention of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers
