Description
Ofloxacin, Dexamethasone & Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose Eye/Ear Drops is a combination medication intended for topical use in both the eyes and ears. It contains Ofloxacin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic; Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory properties; and Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC), a lubricant and viscosity enhancer. The combination is designed to treat bacterial infections accompanied by inflammation and irritation, especially in post-operative or acute infectious conditions.
Mechanism of Action:
- Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for bacterial DNA replication and repair. This results in rapid bacterial cell death.
- Dexamethasone is a potent corticosteroid that works by suppressing the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and cytokines. It helps to reduce inflammation, redness, pain, and swelling.
- Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) is a semi-synthetic polymer that acts as a tear substitute and lubricant. It forms a protective layer over mucosal surfaces, increasing retention time of the active drugs and offering symptomatic relief from dryness or irritation.
Uses:
Ophthalmic Use:
- Bacterial conjunctivitis
- Keratitis and keratoconjunctivitis
- Blepharitis
- Post-operative inflammation after eye surgery (e.g. cataract surgery, LASIK)
- Uveitis with secondary bacterial infection
Otic Use:
- Acute or chronic otitis externa (bacterial)
- Post-surgical inflammation or infection of the external auditory canal
- Inflammatory ear conditions with bacterial involvement
