Description
Mupirocin Ointment IP 2% w/w is a topical antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial skin infections, especially those caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-resistant strains or MRSA) and Streptococcus pyogenes. This ointment contains 2% w/w mupirocin in an ointment base, usually polyethylene glycol, designed for dermal application.
Mechanism of action: Mupirocin acts by reversibly inhibiting bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, thereby blocking the incorporation of isoleucine into bacterial proteins. This disrupts essential protein synthesis, inhibiting bacterial growth and leading to cell death in high concentrations.
-
Bacteriostatic at low concentrations
-
Bactericidal at higher concentrations
Because of its unique target, mupirocin remains effective against many resistant bacterial strains, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Uses:
Primary skin infections:
- Impetigo – a highly contagious superficial infection, especially in children
- Folliculitis – inflammation and infection of hair follicles
- Furunculosis (boils) – painful nodules filled with pus
- Ecthyma – ulcerative impetigo, extending into the dermis
Secondary skin Infections: Infected eczema, dermatitis, or minor cuts, abrasions, burns
Prophylactic use (under physician direction):
- Post-surgical wound infection prevention
-
Preoperative decolonization of MRSA (if used intranasally as a specific formulation)
