Description
Medroxyprogesterone Acetate Tablets IP are synthetic oral progestins widely used for treating menstrual disorders such as amenorrhea and abnormal uterine bleeding. They are also used in hormone replacement therapy to protect the uterus from estrogen-induced hyperplasia. The tablets regulate the endometrium by mimicking natural progesterone and are usually taken in short courses each month. While generally safe, long-term or high-dose use carries risks such as weight gain, mood changes, and rare thromboembolic events.
Mechanism of Action:
Medroxyprogesterone acetate mimics the action of natural progesterone. It binds to progesterone receptors in the uterus and other tissues, regulating the growth and shedding of the endometrium (uterine lining). It also suppresses the secretion of gonadotropins (FSH and LH), preventing ovulation and altering hormone levels depending on dose and indication.
Uses: Medroxyprogesterone tablets are used for a variety of gynecologic and hormonal conditions, including:
- Menstrual disorders: Secondary amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and Abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance
- Endometriosis (off-label)
- Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): In combination with estrogens to protect the endometrium from hyperplasia
- Contraception: (in higher injectable doses; not oral tablets)
- Certain cancers: (e.g., endometrial or renal carcinoma – high-dose therapy)
