Description
Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride Tablets IP 10 mg are oral antihistamine tablets used for the treatment of allergic conditions, anxiety, and tension, as well as for the management of nausea, vomiting, and as a preoperative sedative. Hydroxyzine is a first-generation H₁ receptor antagonist that works by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical responsible for allergy symptoms. It also possesses anxiolytic, sedative, antiemetic, and antipruritic properties.
Hydroxyzine is effective in relieving itching caused by allergic skin conditions such as urticaria or eczema, and can also be used to manage mild anxiety or as adjunctive therapy in more severe anxiety disorders. Its sedative properties make it useful before surgical procedures and for short-term sleep disorders.
Mechanism of Action:
Hydroxyzine blocks H₁ histamine receptors, preventing histamine from producing allergic symptoms. It also has central nervous system depressant effects, likely due to suppression of activity in key subcortical brain areas, which contributes to its anxiolytic and sedative action.
Indications:
- Allergic conditions (e.g., pruritus, urticaria, dermatitis)
- Management of mild anxiety and tension
- Preoperative sedation
- Nausea and vomiting
- Adjunct in treating alcohol withdrawal symptoms
- Sleep aid in cases of temporary insomnia
