Description
Hydroxyzine Drops is an oral liquid formulation of hydroxyzine, an antihistamine with additional anxiolytic, sedative, antiemetic, and antispasmodic properties. It is commonly prescribed for allergic conditions, anxiety, nausea, and itching in both pediatric and adult patients. The drop formulation offers easy dosing for children and those who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
Hydroxyzine works by blocking H1 histamine receptors, preventing allergic symptoms such as hives, itching, and swelling. It also acts on the central nervous system, exerting a calming effect, which is useful for managing mild anxiety and preoperative sedation. In children, it may also be used to treat skin allergies, respiratory allergies, and irritability due to pruritus or anxiety.
Mechanism of Action: Hydroxyzine is a first-generation antihistamine that:
- Blocks H1 receptors, reducing allergic symptoms (itching, hives, swelling)
- Acts on the central nervous system to provide sedative and anxiolytic effects
- Possesses anticholinergic and antiemetic activity, reducing nausea and motion sickness
- Reduces skin responses in allergic conditions like urticaria and eczema
Indications:
- Pruritus (itching) due to allergic conditions such as urticaria, eczema
- Anxiety and tension in children and adults (short-term management)
- Sedation before surgical or dental procedures
- Nausea and vomiting, especially due to motion sickness or post-op care
- Atopic dermatitis and allergic rhinitis (in children, often as adjunct therapy)
