Description
Glimepiride Tablets IP 4 mg are oral antidiabetic tablets used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Glimepiride belongs to the sulfonylurea class of drugs and helps lower blood glucose levels by stimulating the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells. It also increases insulin sensitivity at peripheral target sites, such as muscle and fat tissue.
This medication is typically prescribed as part of a comprehensive diabetes management plan that includes diet, exercise, and sometimes other antidiabetic agents like metformin or insulin. Glimepiride is considered a second-generation sulfonylurea, offering effective glucose control with a longer duration of action and a lower risk of hypoglycemia.
Mechanism of Action:
Glimepiride works by binding to ATP-sensitive potassium channels on the pancreatic beta cell membrane, leading to cell depolarization and an influx of calcium ions. This stimulates insulin secretion. Additionally, it may enhance insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues, improving glucose uptake.
Indications:
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent), when diet and exercise alone do not provide adequate glycemic control
- Can be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic agents (e.g., metformin, DPP-4 inhibitors, or insulin)
