Description
Estradiol valerate is an estrogen ester, a synthetic form of estradiol, which is the primary female sex hormone. In its oral tablet form, it is commonly prescribed to manage hormonal imbalances or deficiencies, especially in postmenopausal women, and in transgender hormone therapy (as part of feminizing hormone treatment).
Mechanism of Action: Estradiol valerate is hydrolyzed in the body to estradiol, which binds to estrogen receptors in various tissues. It modulates gene expression and protein synthesis involved in:
- Development of secondary sexual characteristics
- Maintenance of the reproductive system
- Regulation of bone density, lipid metabolism, and skin integrity
- Modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis
Indications:
- Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) in menopause
- Relief of hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness
- Female hypogonadism
- Ovarian failure or primary ovarian insufficiency
- Prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis (when other treatments are not appropriate)
- Feminizing hormone therapy in transgender women (typically as part of a regimen with anti-androgens)
- Occasionally used to treat certain hormone-sensitive cancers (palliative)
