Description
Esomeprazole is the S-isomer of omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the hydrogen-potassium ATPase enzyme system of gastric parietal cells. The gastro-resistant coating ensures that the drug bypasses the acidic environment of the stomach and is absorbed in the intestines, preserving its effectiveness.
Mechanism of Action:
Esomeprazole irreversibly binds to and inhibits the H⁺/K⁺ ATPase enzyme system (proton pump) in the gastric parietal cells. This inhibition blocks the final step of gastric acid production, leading to a significant and sustained reduction in both basal and stimulated acid secretion.
Uses:
Esomeprazole 40 mg is used for the treatment and management of acid-related gastrointestinal disorders, including:
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) – Erosive esophagitis and maintenance
- Peptic Ulcer Disease – Gastric and duodenal ulcers
- NSAID-associated gastric ulcers – Prevention and treatment
- Zollinger–Ellison Syndrome – Pathologic hypersecretory conditions
- H. pylori eradication (as part of triple therapy)
- Acid-related dyspepsia – Symptom relief
- Stress ulcer prophylaxis in hospitalized patients
