Description
Eplerenone is a selective aldosterone receptor antagonist used primarily in the management of heart failure and hypertension. It blocks the binding of aldosterone to mineralocorticoid receptors, thereby reducing sodium and water retention while conserving potassium. This action helps lower blood pressure, reduce cardiac workload, and prevent the progression of heart failure.
Eplerenone 25 mg tablets are commonly prescribed for patients with chronic heart failure (especially post-myocardial infarction with left ventricular dysfunction) and for those with essential hypertension when first-line treatments are insufficient.
Mechanism of Action:
Eplerenone selectively inhibits the mineralocorticoid (aldosterone) receptor, preventing aldosterone-induced sodium reabsorption and potassium excretion in the kidneys. This helps reduce fluid overload, lower blood pressure, and limit fibrosis and remodeling in the heart and blood vessels.
Indications:
- Heart failure post-myocardial infarction with reduced ejection fraction
- Chronic heart failure (NYHA class II-IV)
- Essential hypertension, particularly in patients at cardiovascular risk
- Left ventricular dysfunction post-MI
