Description
Dutasteride Tablets 0.5 mg are used primarily to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase enzymes, reducing DHT levels, and shrinking the prostate gland. It is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound that acts as a potent inhibitor of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By inhibiting this enzyme, dutasteride reduces DHT levels in the prostate and bloodstream. Lower DHT levels lead to decreased prostate size, relieving symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and improving urinary flow.
Mechanism of Action:
Dutasteride inhibits both type 1 and type 2 isoforms of 5-alpha reductase enzyme, effectively blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT, a hormone responsible for prostate growth. Reduced DHT shrinks the enlarged prostate gland, reducing obstruction and associated symptoms.
Uses:
- Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) to improve symptoms and reduce the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for surgery
- Management of male pattern baldness (off-label in some countries)
- Sometimes used in combination with alpha-blockers for BPH
