Description
Clotrimazole Cream IP 1% is a topical antifungal medication used to treat a variety of skin infections caused by fungi and yeasts, such as ringworm, athlete’s foot, jock itch, candidiasis, and pityriasis versicolor. It works by disrupting the fungal cell membrane, leading to the death of the organism.
Mechanism of Action:
Clotrimazole works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a key component of fungal cell membranes. This disrupts the integrity of the cell membrane, causing leakage of intracellular contents and ultimately cell death. It is effective against:
- Dermatophytes (Trichophyton, Epidermophyton, Microsporum)
- Yeasts (Candida spp.)
- Molds and other superficial fungi
Uses:
Clotrimazole Cream IP is used to treat:
- Tinea corporis (ringworm)
- Tinea cruris (jock itch)
- Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot)
- Cutaneous candidiasis
- Pityriasis versicolor (fungal skin discoloration)
- Vaginal and vulvar candidiasis (when prescribed in specific formulations)
