Description
Clopidogrel Tablets IP 75 mg are widely used antiplatelet drugs that help prevent blood clots in patients with a history of heart attack, stroke, or peripheral vascular disease. As a P2Y12 receptor blocker, it works by reducing platelet aggregation and clot formation. It is typically taken once daily, often in combination with aspirin in high-risk patients. While effective, clopidogrel carries a risk of bleeding and must be used cautiously in patients with bleeding disorders, liver disease, or those on other anticoagulants.
Mechanism of Action:
Clopidogrel is a prodrug that is metabolized in the liver to its active form. It works by irreversibly inhibiting the P2Y12 receptor on platelets, preventing ADP-mediated activation and aggregation of platelets. This antiplatelet action reduces the risk of blood clots, helping to prevent heart attacks, strokes, and other vascular events.
Uses:
Clopidogrel 75 mg is used to prevent atherothrombotic events in:
- Acute coronary syndrome (ACS): Unstable angina, Non–ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)
- Recent myocardial infarction (MI)
- Recent ischemic stroke
- Established peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
- Patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stent placement
- Sometimes used with aspirin as dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT)
