Description
Carvedilol Tablets IP 3.125 mg are a beta-blocker with additional alpha-blocking activity, used mainly to treat heart failure, hypertension, and left ventricular dysfunction after a heart attack. The 3.125 mg dose is typically used to initiate therapy in heart failure to ensure tolerance before titrating up. Carvedilol lowers heart rate and blood pressure while improving cardiac output and preventing remodeling. It should be taken with food and titrated gradually to avoid bradycardia or hypotension.
Mechanism of Action:
Carvedilol works by blocking beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors, reducing heart rate, myocardial contractility, and cardiac output. It also blocks alpha-1 receptors, causing vasodilation and lowering peripheral vascular resistance. This combined action helps reduce blood pressure, improve heart function, and reduce myocardial oxygen demand.
Uses:
Carvedilol Tablets IP 3.125 mg are primarily used for:
- Mild to moderate congestive heart failure (CHF), especially as part of combination therapy
- Left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction (to reduce mortality)
- Essential hypertension (alone or in combination with other antihypertensives)
- Chronic stable angina (off-label)
- The 3.125 mg dose is typically used as the starting dose, especially in heart failure patients to minimize the risk of hypotension and bradycardia.
