Description
Bimix is a sterile injectable solution used for treating erectile dysfunction by inducing an erection through direct injection into the penis. It consists of two vasoactive drugs:
- Papaverine (30–60 mg/mL): A non-specific phosphodiesterase inhibitor and causes smooth muscle relaxation in blood vessels, leading to vasodilation.
- Phentolamine (1–2 mg/mL): An alpha-adrenergic blocker and inhibits vasoconstriction, enhancing blood flow.
These drugs synergistically increase blood flow into the penis, enabling an erection independent of sexual stimulation.
Mechanism:
Injected into the corpus cavernosum, the medications act locally:
- Papaverine relaxes the penile smooth muscle
- Phentolamine blocks sympathetic tone (which otherwise prevents erection).
- Together, they allow the arteries to dilate and trap blood in the penis, leading to rigid erection.
