Description
Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic, structurally related to erythromycin. It is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and atypical bacteria. Each tablet contains 500 mg of azithromycin (as azithromycin dihydrate) and is typically white to off-white, film-coated, and oval-shaped.
Mechanism of Action:
Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing the translocation of peptides. This action blocks bacterial growth, making it bacteriostatic, though it may act bactericidal at higher concentrations or against highly susceptible organisms.
Uses:
Azithromycin 500 mg is used to treat various bacterial infections, including:
- Respiratory tract infections: Acute bronchitis, pneumonia (especially atypical), sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs): Chlamydia trachomatis, uncomplicated gonorrhea
- Urethritis and cervicitis
- Traveler’s diarrhea
- Otitis media (middle ear infection)
- Typhoid fever
