Description
Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic, chemically classified as an azalide, and derived from erythromycin. It is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and atypical bacteria. Azithromycin 250 mg tablets are used for treating various mild to moderate bacterial infections, particularly in respiratory, ENT, skin, and urogenital systems.
Mechanism of Action:
Azithromycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, thereby preventing the translocation of peptides and halting bacterial growth. This mechanism makes it bacteriostatic, although it may be bactericidal at higher concentrations or in highly susceptible strains.
Uses:
Azithromycin 250 mg is indicated for:
- Upper respiratory tract infections: Pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis
- Lower respiratory tract infections: Acute bronchitis, mild pneumonia
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Otitis media (middle ear infection)
- Chlamydia trachomatis infections (urethritis, cervicitis)
- Typhoid fever (mild cases, off-label use in some regions)
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (ABECB)
- Pediatric infections (weight-based use)
