Description
Amoxicillin and Potassium Clavulanate Oral Suspension IP is a widely used broad-spectrum antibiotic formulation designed primarily for pediatric use. It combines amoxicillin, a β-lactam antibiotic, with clavulanic acid (in the form of potassium clavulanate), a β-lactamase inhibitor. This combination enhances the effectiveness of amoxicillin against β-lactamase–producing bacteria that would otherwise be resistant to it. The suspension form ensures accurate dosing, better palatability, and easy administration in children.
It is prescribed for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, otitis media, sinusitis, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and dental infections. The combination works synergistically to provide bactericidal action against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
Mechanism of Action:
- Amoxicillin: A penicillin-class antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death.
-
Clavulanic Acid: A β-lactamase inhibitor that prevents bacterial enzymes from breaking down amoxicillin, thus extending its spectrum to cover β-lactamase–producing strains.
Indications:
- Upper respiratory tract infections (e.g., sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis)
- Lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia)
- Acute otitis media
- Urinary tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Dental abscesses and oral infections
