Description
Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic (anti-parasitic) agent belonging to the benzimidazole class of drugs. It is used for the treatment and management of a wide range of helminthic (worm) and protozoal infections. It is highly effective against both intestinal and tissue parasites.
Mechanism of Action:
- Binding to β-tubulin of parasitic cells, inhibiting polymerization into microtubules.
- Disrupting essential cellular functions such as glucose uptake, glycogen storage, and ATP production.
- The lack of energy causes immobilization and eventual death of the parasite.
Albendazole is larvicidal, ovicidal, and vermicidal.
Uses: Albendazole 400 mg is indicated for the treatment of the following conditions:
Intestinal Helminth Infections:
- Ascariasis (Ascaris lumbricoides)
- Trichuriasis (Trichuris trichiura)
- Enterobiasis (Enterobius vermicularis – pinworm)
- Hookworm infection (Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus)
- Strongyloidiasis (Strongyloides stercoralis)
- Taeniasis (Taenia saginata, Taenia solium)
Tissue Helminth Infections:
- Neurocysticercosis (larval form of Taenia solium)
- Hydatid disease (Echinococcosis) – caused by Echinococcus granulosus
Protozoal and Other Parasitic Infections:
- Giardiasis (especially in children)
- Toxocariasis
- Cutaneous larva migrans
