Description
Albendazole & Ivermectin Suspension is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic oral liquid formulation, commonly prescribed for the treatment of mixed parasitic infections, especially in pediatric patients. This combination targets both intestinal helminths (worms) and ectoparasites, offering a comprehensive approach to deworming. It is effective against a wide range of parasites, including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, pinworms, as well as Strongyloides stercoralis and ectoparasites like lice and scabies.
This dual therapy is especially useful in regions with high prevalence of polyparasitic infections, helping improve nutritional status, growth, and overall health in children. The suspension form ensures palatability and ease of dosing in young patients.
Mechanism of Action:
- Albendazole: A benzimidazole class anthelmintic that inhibits tubulin polymerization, leading to impaired glucose uptake and energy depletion in parasites, resulting in their death.
- Ivermectin: A macrocyclic lactone that binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in nerve and muscle cells of parasites, causing paralysis and death of the worms or ectoparasites.
Together, they act synergistically to target a broader range of parasitic infections more effectively than either agent alone.
Indications:
- Mixed intestinal helminth infections
- Strongyloidiasis
- Ascariasis (roundworm)
- Hookworm and whipworm infestations
- Enterobiasis (pinworms)
- Scabies (adjunct therapy)
- Lice infestations (when systemic therapy is indicated)
