Amoxicillin & Potassium Clavulanate Tablets IP (625mg)

Amoxicillin and Potassium Clavulanate Tablets IP are a broad-spectrum antibiotic combination used to treat various bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and dental infections. Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that kills bacteria by disrupting their cell walls, while clavulanate potassium is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents bacterial resistance by blocking the enzymes that degrade amoxicillin. Together, they provide enhanced antibacterial coverage, especially against resistant strains.

Description

Amoxicillin and Potassium Clavulanate Tablets IP are a broad-spectrum antibiotic combination used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. Amoxicillin is a penicillin-class beta-lactam antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. However, some bacteria produce beta-lactamase enzymes that make them resistant to amoxicillin alone.

Potassium clavulanate is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from degradation by these enzymes, thereby extending its spectrum of activity to include beta-lactamase–producing organisms. This makes the combination effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including resistant strains.

Mechanism of Action:

  • Amoxicillin interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).
  • Clavulanic acid binds irreversibly to beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant bacteria, preventing them from inactivating amoxicillin.

Indications:

  • Upper respiratory tract infections (e.g., sinusitis, tonsillitis, otitis media)
  • Lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia)
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Dental infections
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Gynecological infections
