Description
Rabeprazole Gastro-Resistant Tablets IP are oral medications classified as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). They are used to treat acid-related gastrointestinal disorders by reducing the production of stomach acid. The “gastro-resistant” (or enteric-coated) formulation ensures the tablet passes through the stomach without breaking down, so it can be absorbed in the intestine where it remains effective and stable.
Mechanism of Action:
Rabeprazole inhibits the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system (also called the “proton pump”) in the stomach lining, which is responsible for the final step in the secretion of gastric acid. This leads to a significant reduction in acid production, providing relief from symptoms like heartburn and aiding in healing of ulcers.
Indications:
Rabeprazole is used in the treatment of:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Peptic ulcer disease (gastric and duodenal ulcers)
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (pathologic hypersecretory conditions)
- Helicobacter pylori eradication (as part of combination therapy)
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-induced ulcers
