Description
Pancreatin Minimicrospheres Capsules are enzyme-replacement therapy used for patients with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). This condition occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes to properly break down and absorb nutrients, commonly due to cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatectomy, or pancreatic cancer.
The minimicrospheres contain three key digestive enzymes: lipase (fat digestion), amylase (carbohydrate digestion), and protease (protein digestion). These enzymes are enteric-coated to ensure they are not destroyed by stomach acid and are released in the small intestine, where digestion takes place.
The formulation in minimicrosphere or pellet form allows better distribution throughout the intestine, ensuring optimal contact with food for efficient nutrient absorption.
Mechanism of Action:
Pancreatin supplements the digestive enzymes normally secreted by the pancreas. Once released in the duodenum, lipase breaks down fats into fatty acids, amylase converts carbohydrates into sugars, and protease breaks proteins into amino acids, helping the body absorb essential nutrients.
Indications:
Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency due to:
- Cystic fibrosis
- Chronic pancreatitis
- Pancreatic surgery
- Pancreatic tumors
- Shwachman-Diamond syndrome
