Description
Cefuroxime Axetil Tablets IP are broad-spectrum oral antibiotic tablets used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Cefuroxime Axetil is the oral prodrug of Cefuroxime, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Once absorbed, it is rapidly hydrolyzed to the active form, cefuroxime, which inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. This leads to cell lysis and death of susceptible bacteria.
Cefuroxime exhibits bactericidal activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. It is stable to many beta-lactamases, making it effective even against certain resistant strains. It is commonly prescribed for respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted diseases.
Mechanism of Action:
Cefuroxime binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, interfering with peptidoglycan synthesis. This weakens the cell wall, resulting in bacterial lysis and death.
Indications:
- Upper and lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., pharyngitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia)
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Otitis media
- Gonorrhea (uncomplicated cases)
- Lyme disease (early stage)
