Description
Tadalafil is a selective PDE5 inhibitor that increases blood flow by relaxing the smooth muscles in blood vessels. It is primarily used for treating:
- Erectile Dysfunction (ED) – helps achieve and maintain an erection in response to sexual stimulation.
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) – relieves symptoms like difficulty in urination.
-
Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) – in different dosing regimens.
Mechanism of Action:
Tadalafil works by inhibiting phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). Inhibition of PDE5 leads to increased levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which relaxes smooth muscle and increases blood flow, particularly in the corpus cavernosum (penile tissue) and lower urinary tract.
Indications:
- Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) (sometimes in lower doses)
- Combination of ED and BPH
- Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (usually different dosage form/dose)
