Description
Podophyllum Resin, Benzoin, Aloes & Salicylic Acid Solution, topical solution is a keratolytic and cytotoxic preparation primarily used for the treatment of warts, especially plantar warts, verrucae, and other hyperkeratotic skin lesions. It combines the antimitotic action of podophyllum resin with the keratolytic properties of salicylic acid, enhanced by the protective and healing effects of benzoin and aloes.
This solution is formulated to soften and destroy abnormal skin growths by breaking down the hardened keratin layer and arresting cell proliferation in the wart tissue. It is typically applied under medical supervision and requires caution due to the potent cytotoxic nature of podophyllum resin.
Mechanism of Action:
- Podophyllum Resin: Contains podophyllotoxin, which inhibits mitosis by binding to microtubules in the wart tissue. It causes necrosis of hyperplastic epidermal cells, leading to wart destruction.
- Salicylic Acid: A keratolytic agent that softens and dissolves the keratin in thickened skin, allowing for easier removal of warts.
- Benzoin: Acts as a skin protectant and enhances adherence of the solution to skin.
- Aloe: Provides anti-inflammatory and healing support, reducing irritation caused by the keratolytic agents.
Indications:
- Common warts (verruca vulgaris)
- Plantar warts (verruca plantaris)
- Hyperkeratotic lesions
- Benign cutaneous lesions
