Description
Telmisartan & Hydrochlorothiazide Tablets IP are a fixed-dose combination used for the treatment of high blood pressure. Telmisartan, an ARB, works by relaxing blood vessels, while hydrochlorothiazide reduces blood volume through diuresis. The combination is particularly effective in patients whose blood pressure is not well controlled by a single agent. It helps reduce the risk of strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems in hypertensive individuals.
Mechanism of Action:
- Telmisartan blocks the action of angiotensin II on its receptors in blood vessels, preventing vasoconstriction. This leads to vasodilation and reduced blood pressure.
- Hydrochlorothiazide promotes the excretion of sodium and water by inhibiting sodium reabsorption in the distal tubules of the kidney. This reduces blood volume, which also helps lower blood pressure.
Uses:
- Primary Indication: Treatment of essential hypertension in adults, particularly when blood pressure is not adequately controlled by telmisartan or hydrochlorothiazide alone.
- May reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in hypertensive patients at high risk.
