Description
Gatifloxacin eye drops contain Gatifloxacin, a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic. This sterile ophthalmic solution is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye by inhibiting bacterial DNA synthesis, thereby killing susceptible bacteria. It is effective against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including strains resistant to earlier fluoroquinolones. The formulation is designed for topical application to the eye, providing targeted antibacterial action with minimal systemic absorption.
Mechanism of Action:
Gatifloxacin inhibits bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair. By disrupting these enzymes, gatifloxacin prevents bacterial cell division and causes bacterial cell death. It exhibits potent bactericidal activity against a wide range of pathogens commonly responsible for ocular infections, including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and others.
Uses:
- Bacterial conjunctivitis
- Bacterial keratitis
- Blepharitis and other superficial bacterial eye infections
- Prevention of bacterial infections following ocular surgery or trauma
