Description
Salicylic Acid Ointment IP 6% w/w is a topical keratolytic preparation used to treat a variety of hyperkeratotic skin conditions, where there is excessive build-up of dead skin. At this concentration, salicylic acid softens and breaks down the outer layer of thickened skin, promoting exfoliation and enhancing skin renewal. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as corns, calluses, warts, psoriasis, and chronic eczema. The ointment is formulated in a petrolatum or other suitable ointment base, providing occlusion and moisture retention to aid in the keratolytic effect of salicylic acid.
Mechanism of Action:
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) with keratolytic, comedolytic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It works by solubilizing intercellular cement in the stratum corneum, causing the outer skin layer to shed. This action reduces scaling, softens thickened skin, and helps open clogged pores. It may also have mild antiseptic and antifungal properties, aiding in reducing bacterial load on the skin.
Uses:
- Corns and Calluses
- Common Warts and Plantar Warts
- Psoriasis (localized thick plaques)
- Chronic Eczema with lichenification
- Seborrheic Dermatitis (thickened lesions)
- Ichthyosis and Keratosis Pilaris
- Dandruff and Scalp Scaling (if in suitable formulation)
