Miconazole Nitrate Cream IP

Miconazole Nitrate Cream IP 2% is a topical antifungal medication used to treat various skin infections caused by fungi and yeasts, such as athlete’s foot, ringworm, jock itch, cutaneous candidiasis, and pityriasis versicolor. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes, leading to the death of the fungus. The cream is applied twice daily to the affected area and typically provides relief within a few days, though treatment should continue for 2–4 weeks to prevent recurrence. It is generally well tolerated, with occasional mild side effects like skin irritation or redness.

Description

Miconazole Nitrate Cream is a broad-spectrum antifungal cream formulated for topical use. It appears as a smooth, white or off-white cream and is applied directly to the skin or affected area. It is used to treat a wide range of fungal and yeast infections on the skin.

Mechanism of Action:

Miconazole is an imidazole antifungal that works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. Disruption of ergosterol synthesis compromises membrane integrity, leading to leakage of cellular contents and fungal cell death. It also has mild antibacterial activity against certain gram-positive bacteria.

Uses:

Miconazole Nitrate Cream IP is used to treat:

  • Dermatophytosis (e.g., Tinea corporis, Tinea cruris, Tinea pedis – ringworm, jock itch, athlete’s foot)
  • Cutaneous candidiasis (yeast infection caused by Candida albicans)
  • Pityriasis versicolor (a superficial fungal infection caused by Malassezia furfur)
  • Intertrigo (fungal rash in skin folds)
  • Fungal diaper rash (in some cases, under medical supervision)
  • Secondary infections where gram-positive bacteria are present
