Description
Miconazole Nitrate Cream is a broad-spectrum antifungal cream formulated for topical use. It appears as a smooth, white or off-white cream and is applied directly to the skin or affected area. It is used to treat a wide range of fungal and yeast infections on the skin.
Mechanism of Action:
Miconazole is an imidazole antifungal that works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. Disruption of ergosterol synthesis compromises membrane integrity, leading to leakage of cellular contents and fungal cell death. It also has mild antibacterial activity against certain gram-positive bacteria.
Uses:
Miconazole Nitrate Cream IP is used to treat:
- Dermatophytosis (e.g., Tinea corporis, Tinea cruris, Tinea pedis – ringworm, jock itch, athlete’s foot)
- Cutaneous candidiasis (yeast infection caused by Candida albicans)
- Pityriasis versicolor (a superficial fungal infection caused by Malassezia furfur)
- Intertrigo (fungal rash in skin folds)
- Fungal diaper rash (in some cases, under medical supervision)
- Secondary infections where gram-positive bacteria are present
