Description
Calcitriol is the biologically active form of Vitamin D₃ that plays a crucial role in calcium and phosphate metabolism. It promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the gastrointestinal tract, helps regulate bone mineralization, and maintains serum calcium levels. Calcitriol capsules are prescribed to manage conditions characterized by calcium deficiency, such as chronic renal failure, hypocalcemia, osteoporosis, and hypoparathyroidism.
Mechanism of Action:
Calcitriol binds to vitamin D receptors in the intestines, bones, and kidneys to enhance the intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. This action increases serum calcium levels, facilitating normal bone mineralization and preventing disorders caused by calcium deficiency.
Uses:
- Management of hypocalcemia in patients with chronic kidney disease or on dialysis
- Treatment of hypoparathyroidism
- Prevention and treatment of renal osteodystrophy
- Supportive therapy in osteoporosis and rickets caused by vitamin D deficiency
- Certain cases of psoriasis
