Description

Aciclovir Cream IP 5% w/w is a topical antiviral medication used to treat skin infections caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), including cold sores (herpes labialis) and genital herpes lesions. The cream contains 5% w/w of aciclovir, a guanine analog that stops viral replication by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase.

It is most effective when applied at the earliest sign of infection, such as tingling, itching, or redness, to prevent the virus from multiplying and to reduce the duration and severity of outbreaks.

Mechanism of Action: Aciclovir is a synthetic purine nucleoside analog. After penetration into infected skin cells, it is converted into its active form (acyclovir triphosphate) by viral enzymes. It inhibits viral DNA polymerase, preventing viral DNA synthesis and replication without affecting normal host cells.

Indications:

  • Herpes labialis (cold sores) – around the lips and mouth
  • Genital herpes (HSV-2) – external lesions
  • Initial and recurrent herpes simplex infections of the skin
  • Can be used in immunocompetent patients for short-term treatment of localized HSV infections
